Swakopmund City Tours

In Swakopmund, Shared History Tours work in partnership with locally rooted guides whose work is central to preserving and sharing the history of the Ovaherero and Nama genocide. Rather than operating our own tours, we collaborate with experienced partners whose perspectives and lived connections make these tours especially meaningful.

Swakopmund City Tour with Laidlaw Peringanda

City Centre Historical Exploration
This city tour is guided from an Ovaherero perspective and is led by Laidlaw Peringanda, a descendant of Ovaherero genocide survivors. Drawing on oral history, family memory, and long-term community activism, the tour makes the history of the genocide visible within Swakopmund’s urban space.
The tour visits key sites such as the Marine Denkmal, the local cemetery with unmarked graves of Ovaherero and Nama genocide victims, and the Swakopmund Genocide Museum, which Laidlaw founded to document the genocide through archival photographs and historical material. He is also actively involved in restoring unmarked graves, working to ensure these sites of memory are recognised and preserved. Going beyond Swakopmund’s seaside charm, the tour centres Ovaherero memories and experiences, offering visitors a meaningful way to understand the town’s colonial history and its lasting impact today. We are happy to organise your city tour with Laidlaw Peringanda.

Postcolonial Walking Tour with Jana (Exploradio)

City Centre Historical Exploration
Jana is the creator of Exploradio Namibia, a Namibian audio guide app for travellers, and offers postcolonial walking tours in Swakopmund’s city centre. Her tours work both as an accessible introduction and as a deeper learning experience for visitors who already have an interest in Namibia’s history.
Our postcolonial walking tour through Windhoek’s city centre explores German colonialism in Namibia, from the beginnings of colonial rule to the first genocide of the twentieth century. The tour places this history within the city itself, showing how colonialism is embedded in streets, monuments, and public spaces. Walking through the town, the tour explores how Swakopmund’s colonial past continues to shape Namibian society today. It touches on the role of colonial trading houses whose presence remains visible, sites connected to genocide, and the lasting influence of colonial rule on education and social structures. With a background in African Studies, teaching, storytelling, and voice acting, Jana presents complex history in a clear and engaging way. Based at the coast, she offers family-friendly walking tours in German, suitable for all age groups.
